The country's utility projects are gaining momentum and demand for circular solutions in construction work is increasing. Two of the country's largest private soil treatment companies will now collaborate to offer total solutions in the form of recycling of materials to utility companies.
Kilometers of pipeline trenches, for district heating, among other things, are being dug in Denmark these years. This generates large amounts of excavated soil and at the same time a large consumption of non-renewable raw materials such as sand and gravel to replace the excavated soil. Raw materials that, due to our resource scarcity, require better raw material utilization. Therefore, there is increasing demand in the supply sector for circular solutions that ensure more sustainable and less raw material-intensive construction work, which can reduce the extraction of natural resources. It is important to have a balanced quality in mind, so that non-renewable raw materials are reserved for areas where alternatives do not exist.
Circularity has long been a focus for both SR-Gruppen, which specializes in upcycling excavated soil into alternative raw materials, and Blue Phoenix, which is Denmark's largest soil processor. It is therefore natural that Blue Phoenix and SR-Gruppen are now entering into a collaboration where the parties can jointly offer a total solution in the materials area. In this way, utility customers are ensured safe, flexible and professional handling of the excavated soil at Blue Phoenix, while at the same time being able to obtain recycled materials for their construction work, such as cable trenches.
The idea behind the collaboration is that Blue Phoenix can offer solutions for all elements of a supply task, based on upcycled materials and thus be able to replace the use of non-renewable raw materials. Blue Phoenix COO, Rasmus Brødsgaard Buch explains:
"SR-Gruppen and Blue Phoenix are entering into this partnership to make it easy for utilities and their contractors to choose circular solutions in construction work. When excavated soil is transported away from the project area and into a Blue Phoenix soil reception facility, we will in collaboration with SR-Gruppen be able to offer circular materials from the soil that can be taken back and used in construction work rather than being transported in the gravel pit. SR-Gruppen has already proven with a number of utilities that their upcycled products can enable the recycling of excavated soil throughout the entire pipeline trench, and it is these products that we look forward to complementing our existing range of construction materials with.. "
Production of the new backfill material will begin at Blue Phoenix's largest receiving and processing facility on Selinevej in Copenhagen. Over time, SR-Gruppen's upcycled backfill material will also be offered at Blue Phoenix's other receiving sites.
Managing Director of the SR Group, Martin Peters, says:
"There are many synergies in the collaboration with Blue Phoenix, and we share the fundamental vision that soil is a resource that we must utilize. The collaboration with Blue Phoenix makes it possible for SR Group to offer our upcycled backfill materials for even more of the country's construction projects. This will be extended to all of Blue Phoenix's receiving and treatment facilities in Denmark. It is an important supplement to our on-site work, where we assist utilities, among others, in reducing the use of non-renewable raw materials by producing lime-stabilized soil and other upcycled materials on the construction site itself. We are confident that the collaboration can further push the use of the large amounts of excavated soil generated each year as a resource.. "
About the SR Group
Since its inception in 2010, SR Group has been involved in niche products within road construction and road maintenance. The common denominator for all our services is saving resources such as:
– Raw materials
– CO2
– Time
– Money
In-situ lime stabilization has been the cornerstone of our services from the beginning. In this area, we are the market leader in Denmark with an annual production of approximately 6 million tons of soil. Knowledge and experience in this area have led us to expand our services within mobile soil treatment plants and upcycling of excavated soil for utilities and contractors, among others. The technique of upcycling excavated soil into alternative raw materials such as sand and gravel has been developed and refined since 2012. In this area, SR-Gruppen is also the market leader in Denmark, and has by far the greatest experience and expertise. Our collaboration with authorities and other market players has meant that our knowledge and experience have been incorporated into the national standards for the area.
SR-Gruppen is a 100% Danish-owned company. See more at www.sr-gruppen.dk
About Blue Phoenix
Blue Phoenix is one of the country's largest environmental companies with 17 reception and treatment facilities and more than 200 employees. We are the country's largest land recipient and treat approx. 1/3 of Denmark's total construction and demolition waste. Our goal is to transform waste and soil into circular products on an industrial scale and with sufficient documentation. To achieve this, we collaborate broadly with the entire construction and demolition sector to ensure that waste resources are increasingly reused, recycled and recovered. Blue Phoenix is owned by the Dutch Blue Phoenix Group (BPG). Read more at www.rgsnordic.com.
