Lime stabilisation of soil

Lime-stabilised soil in building and construction projects

4.5 million tons. That's how much surplus soil finds its way to our reception facility every year. Overall, we as a society move enormous amounts of soil around Denmark, and soil is today considered a material of no particular value. But in fact, certain types of soil have the potential to replace scarce natural resources such as sand and gravel in many construction projects. Clean or cleaned, clayey soil can be stabilised with e.g. quicklime and is used as a substitute for e.g. sand cushions in construction and filling in cable trenches. Recycling soil with lime stabilisation saves raw materials and reduces climate impact through reduced transport.

Blue Phoenix is one of Denmark's largest recipients and suppliers of soil. We produce stabilized soil for project sales at all of our 16 receiving and processing plants and have already supplied lime-stabilized soil to large and small construction and building projects throughout the country. With over 30 years of experience in soil handling, we are your guarantee for consistent quality material and delivery capability, even in larger projects.

Please note that the use of lime-stabilised soil in building and construction projects always requires permission from your local authority and must comply with the rules for moving soil in Denmark.

Lime stabilisation makes soil a valuable resource

"There is a huge untapped potential in using lime-stabilised soil as backfill when pipes are buried, or as a replacement for sand cushions when building foundations. Lime stabilisation makes wet and sticky clay soil suitable for building, so that it can be used on an equal footing with sand and gravel materials in the construction industry".
Caroline Hejlesen
Chief Market Officer, JUN Hejlesen & Hansen

Selection of suitable soil

On the basis of a geotechnical assessment, we select soil at our facility that is suitable for lime stabilisation, e.g. on the basis of clay content.

Clean soil and sampling

We only use documented, clean soil and take samples for every 30 tonnes.

Production and quality in the mix

Production of lime stabilised takes place with respect for quality, the environment and health. We ensure thorough mixing and have our own lime stabilisation plant.

Storage and sale

We store the stabilized material under cover and deliver it for project sales at all Blue Phoenix facilities.
