Robot sorting of construction waste

Robot sorting of Copenhagen's construction waste

From the summer of 2024, Blue Phoenix will offer robotic sorting of construction waste at our reception and processing facility on Vindmøllevej in Copenhagen. This is done with an advanced 100% electric system from Finnish ZenRobotics. The robotic sorting system is equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and is fully automated. The central location of the system is intended to reduce heavy transport of construction waste in Copenhagen and increase circularity for construction waste that cannot be adequately sorted on the construction site. Documentation and waste data are also significantly improved by using robotic sorting for processing construction waste. Read more about the system and its many benefits below.

Robot sorting ensures circularity

Blue Phoenix's upcoming robotic sorting system from ZenRobotics is designed for efficient processing of construction waste. Using four robotic arms and AI-powered sensors, the system can quickly recognize and sort waste fractions of up to 40 kilograms that are suitable for reuse, recycling or recovery. This could be, for example, bricks, wood, iron and metal or different types of plastic.

The robotic sorting system is fully automated, can in principle run 24/7, and the robot arms can each make up to 9.200 selections per hour. The sorted resources end up in separate boxes, from where they can be further processed or shipped directly for reuse, recycling or recovery, depending on the waste composition, market opportunities and the customer's wishes and needs. After processing, the customer receives a detailed Blue Phoenix report with waste data and documentation for waste circularity.

Upcycling rather than downcycling

In many places, especially in the larger cities, there is not enough space to sort out construction waste sufficiently and in all fractions. This is where the robotic sorting facility can really make a positive difference.

While sorted and clean fractions can be transported on for direct reuse or recycling, mixed waste fractions can be sorted far more efficiently by the robotic plant than with previous manual sorting.

With a robotic sorting plant specifically designed for construction waste, waste resources such as different types of wood or plastic will be efficiently sorted separately.

Over time, the robotic facility will become better and better at recognizing and extracting resources from regional waste streams.

Increased security with automation

Safety for our employees is a top priority at Blue Phoenix. The upcoming robotic sorting plant is fully automated and can be operated remotely. In practice, this means far less direct human contact with the construction waste during processing.

All in all, sorting waste with a robotic sorting system is a completely different and much safer maneuver than with traditional sorting, which usually takes place outside and with the use of large machines.

It is always preferable to avoid as much contact as possible with waste streams, regardless of the nature of the waste. We achieve this with a ZenRobotics robot sorting plant for construction waste, while at the same time increasing the efficiency of waste sorting considerably.
